Healthcare Happenings: A year of achievements at NUMC

Healthcare Happenings

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all of us at New Ulm Medical Center (NUMC). We are grateful for all of the support throughout the year from our community and surrounding region. It continues to be a privilege to work alongside an amazing group of employees and physicians who are dedicated to providing compassionate care 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

Some achievements for NUMC in 2016 included: recognition in the top 2 percent of national rural hospitals for value, improved quality and safety outcomes in our clinic and hospital, growth with our new Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute, the addition of 3D Mammography (only center in the region), welcomed six new physicians, the expansion of walk-in clinic to add more hours seven days per week, over $500,000 in donations and planned gifts through our Foundation, and a national documentary film about Heart of New Ulm and our community.

We know it is important to you that high quality care is available locally and we are striving to enhance our services. A continued strength of NUMC is more than 20 primary care providers caring for more than 24,000 patients annually. In 2016, we added two new primary care physicians – Dr. Brian Lovig and Dr. Victoria Wang. Next year we will have at least two additional family physicians joining our clinic.

Our Women’s Health program continues to expand as we benefit from Dr. Abrea Roark, OB/GYN spending her first full year in New Ulm. In August our Virginia Piper Cancer Institute welcomed a new oncologist, Dr. Anas Khanfar, who has quickly built positive relationships with patients and our team.

NUMC was able to expand access to psychiatry services in September with the addition of two great physicians, Dr. Jagan Jakkula and Dr. Tulasi Kanukuntla. We also look forward to new opportunities in our Orthopedics and Sports Medicine programs with the surgical expertise and experience of Dr. Mario DeSouza and Dr. Jean Eelma.

In January, Dr. Eric Schned, Rheumatologist will become a part-time physician with our local group and we will add Dermatology services through a partnership with Mankato Clinic. Next summer, we will welcome another Emergency Department physician, Dr. Jessica Greupner, who completed her residency training at Regions Hospital and is finishing an ultrasound fellowship. With the addition of Dr. Greupner and Dr. Brittany Brindle this past year we will be unique in greater Minnesota with four physicians with extensive ER residency training which elevates the services provided in a regional medical center like NUMC.

The renal dialysis program located at NUMC will be transitioning in early 2017 to a new community location on North Broadway. The dialysis program, operated by Mayo Clinic Health System in our hospital for many years, will transition to a new company, DaVita, who operates over 2,300 kidney dialysis centers across the nation. We are glad our community will have access to much needed kidney dialysis service through this reinvestment.

Thank you for your support and please let us know how we can better serve your health care needs.
