Sylvia Ruth Moran, 86, of Sleepy Eye, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019, surrounded by her children at Divine Providence Community Home.

Visitation will be on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. and will continue on Monday from 9 until 10 a.m. at the Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye.

Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye on Monday, Jan. 21, at 10:30 am. The clergy will be Msgr. Eugene Lozinski. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Sleepy Eye.

Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Divine Providence Community Home and St. Mary’s School.

Sylvia Ruth Loftness was born Aug. 14, 1932 in Fairfax to Reuben and Daisy (Case) Loftness. She grew up in Fairfax, graduated in 1950 from Fairfax High School and attended Swedish Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis. On July 21, 1952 Sylvia married Murland “Moe” Moran at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Fairfax. They moved to Sleepy Eye where they joined St Mary’s Church and Moe taught and coached at St Mary’s Catholic School. Together they raised five children. Sylvia was a dedicated mother and homemaker and also worked at Sleepy Eye Medical Clinic. On Jan. 1, 1985 Moe sadly passed away. Sylvia then worked at Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital until 1993. On July 2, 1993 she married Leo Lehar and moved to King City, CA until Leo’s retirement in 1995. They enjoyed traveling, camping, pontooning and fishing. On Jan. 31, 2002 Leo passed away.

Sylvia was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, CCW, Confraternity of Christian Mothers, and VFW Auxiliary. She served as an election judge for many years.

Sylvia is survived by her son Bill; daughters Kathy (Chuck) Spaeth, Jane Cook, Sheila LaPlant, Mary Beth (George) Heim; grandchildren Laura (David) Fischer, Rachel (Joe) Snyder, Amanda (Craig) Murphy, Mary (Erik) Olson, Lydia Moran, Andy (Angie) Cook, Billy (Allissa) Cook, John (Amanda) Cook, Valerie (Diego) Patinò, Lisa Moran, Katie LaPlant, Adam Heim, Jacob Heim, and 31 great-grandchildren who gave her great joy. Also, survived by sisters Bridgett (Don) Salzmann and Elaine Levahn; brothers Ron Loftness, Ted (Sue) Loftness, and Pat Maxwell. Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, sons-in-law Jeff Cook and Marcus LaPlant; brother Mike Maxwell, sister-in-law Mary Loftness; brothers-in-law Rev. Robert Moran and Rev. John Moran, and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Irene and Bob Lampe.
