Norman “Norm” Otto Warta

NEW ULM — Norman “Norm” Otto Warta of New Ulm passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at the Fairfax Community Home in Fairfax.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11:00 am Monday, November 26, 2018 at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm. Burial will follow in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery in New Ulm, MN. Full Military Rites will be conducted at the cemetery by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 1:00 – 4:00 pm Sunday, November 25, 2018 at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home NORTH Chapel and will continue from 9:30 – 10:30 on Monday, November 26, 2018 at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home NORTH Chapel in New Ulm.

Norm is survived by his four loving daughters, Margaret Swenstad of Menomonie, WI, Karen (Charles) Sellner of Sleepy Eye, Barbara (James) Borth of Fairfax, and Lynn (Myron) Mathiowetz of New Ulm; grandchildren, Shana York, Jessica York, Amy Ostermann, Chad Sellner, Shari Moll, Jeffrey Borth, Greg Borth, Joseph Mathiowetz, and Ben O. Mathiowetz; nine great-grandchildren; brother, Denis J. Warta of New Ulm; sisters-in-law, Eleanor (Joe) Westerberg of Shoreview and Toya Moselle of Minneapolis; brother-in-law, Roger Moselle of Minneapolis; and many nieces and nephews.

Norm was preceded in death by the love of his life this past June, Lois M. Warta of 66 years; parents, Henry and Theresa Warta; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Warta, Barbara Hamilton, Beverly Summerfield, Patricia Dols, Goldie Moselle, and Toby Moselle; and brothers-in-law, George Moselle, Greg Moselle, Donald Moselle, Jack Moselle, Richard Moselle, Arthur Dols, and Dewell Hamilton.

Norman Otto Warta was born March 4, 1929 to Henry and Theresa (Hoffmann) Warta in New Ulm. He attended Holy Trinity Grade and High School in New Ulm graduating in 1947. He enjoyed playing football, basketball and baseball for the Holy Trinity Wildcats. He played basketball in the 1946 Minnesota State Tournament. After High school he learned the cabinet-making trade at Radke Sash and Door in New Ulm until 1951 when he enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Norm attended Louisiana Tech and served at the Security Service USAFSS Headquarters which later he served at the Air Intelligence Agency as a Crypto-Tele-Type Operator. Norm served with Johnny Cash in the 6923d Personal Processing Squadron (PPS) at the Brooks Air Force Base. Norm was Honorably Discharged in 1955 having served 4 years and attaining the Rank of Staff Sargent all 4 years.

On October 27, 1951 he married Lois Moselle at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Minneapolis at that time, serving in the US Air Force moving to San Antonio, TX for a few years. The couple then returned to his hometown of New Ulm, Minnesota to make their new home and be closer to family. In 1962 Norm started a new career with Lindsay Soft Water as the Service Manager until retiring in 1991. In 1982 he built a new home on 32 acres on the K.C. Road. He enjoyed the outdoor life very much. Hunting was always a part of his life, especially deer hunting out West in Wyoming with his buddies, North Dakota with his cousins and grandson and in his woods with daughter and grandsons. He even went black bear hunting up north a few years which he enjoyed very much with his good buddies. He raised White Tail and Fallow deer, Wild Turkeys, Wild Geese and Pheasants at his K.C. Road home before retiring in New Ulm in 2006. He loved his friend and companion, his Labrador Hans. He bowled on several New Ulm leagues for 50 years and was the City All Events Bowling Champion in 1966. A woodworker by trade which he later turned into building with his own home sawed lumber making many projects for his home and family and friends. He enjoyed cutting and splitting firewood and mushroom hunting in his woods and learning and making maple syrup with his friends. Norm loved life, spending every moment keeping busy with his many projects including gardening, having fun with his buddies, going to feeds, spending afternoons at the Legion for Thirsty Thursday. He spent his free time enjoying his family and cooking up his venison and making homemade Essig Kraut, playing cards from Sheephead, Solitaire to Old Maid and board games with his girls and grandchildren.

Norm was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph SUF, Hermann Monument Society, German-Bohemian Society, and served in the Honor Guard at Military funerals for 20 years. He was a Life Member of the Seifert-Bianchi American Legion Post 132 serving in several capacities, a Life Member of DAV Chapter No. 15, also the USAFSS Comm-Sec Veterans Group, Brooks Air Force Base Heritage Foundation and Freedom Through Vigilance Association. Norm was also an over 60 year member of the Fugawee Tribe, alias; Hatchet Man.

Norm had the best sense of humor and loved a good joke. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends and anyone who knew him.
