Evelyn Alvina Amelia (Pomerenke) Hahnke

SLEEPY EYE — Evelyn Alvina Amelia (Pomerenke) Hahnke, 94, was called into the loving arms of Jesus, her Savior, on November 13, 2017 at the Sleepy Eye Care Center.

A service of comfort and praise will be held at St. Paul’s in New Ulm on Friday, November 17 at 2:00pm. Visitation will begin at St. Paul’s at noon and will continue until the service. A private interment will take place in the St. Paul’s Cemetery.

Evelyn was born on September 6, 1923 in Le Sueur, MN to Emil and Alvina (Lange) Pomerenke. “Evie” was made a child of God through Holy Baptism and promised to be faithful to her Lord when she was confirmed.

Evie married Rev. Lloyd Hahnke on December 23, 1945 at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in St. Paul, MN. The Lord blessed them with five children.

Evie was a wonderful mother and pastor’s wife. Though she had never taken piano lessons, she played beautifully by ear and at times was the church organist. Evie was blessed with a lovely soprano voice and was the soloist at many weddings, funerals, and special services.

Evelyn’s husband was the Dean of Students and professor at DMLC and MLA. Evie happily assisted the campus family, mending students’ clothes, baking pies for the tutors, and comforting homesick students. Many remember that she hosted the Christmas dorm party, baking the buns for ham sandwiches and serving her delicious homemade Christmas cookies. She also worked part time at DMLC.

Evie had a tremendous love for children. She taught Sunday School and VBS and volunteered at St. Paul’s Lutheran School. Evie and her husband also parented many foster children.

When Evie’s husband became a pastor at St. Paul’s in New Ulm, Evie worked at Retzlaff’s. After her husband retired, they moved to their lake home near Litchfield. Evie used her long cane pole to catch “keepers”. She loved to fish, read, bake, and sew. Most of all, Evie enjoyed entertaining family at the lake.

Evie will be missed by her children: Donald (Shirleen) of Eau Claire, WI, David (Annette) of Fon du Lac, WI, Maribeth (Gary) Wong of New Ulm, and Karilynn (Robert) Barthels of Mishicot, WI; daughter-in-law, Ruth Hahnke of Manitowoc, WI; 21 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and brother, Lloyd Pomerenke. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd; son, Steven; and 8 brothers and sisters.

Memorials may be sent to the tuition assistance funds at Martin Luther College, MN Valley Lutheran High School, or St. Paul’s Lutheran School in New Ulm.
