NEW ULM — Randal Victor Berdan, 79, of New Ulm died Thursday, June 15, 2017 at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with Monsignor John Richter celebrating the Mass. Burial will be at a later date in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday and 7:30-10 a.m. Tuesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, SOUTH CHAPEL, in New Ulm. To leave an online condolence for his family or to sign the guestbook go to: www.mvfh.org.

Randy Berdan was born on the home farm in Lafayette Township, Nicollet County on April 5, 1938 to Victor and Eleanor (Preisinger) Berdan. He attended Country School District 53 and New Ulm Public School, graduating in 1956.

On Oct. 23, 1963, Randy married Joan Brey at St. Gregory Catholic Church in Lafayette. They lived in New Ulm with Randy working at General Trading Company for 38 years. After retirement in 2000, he was the caretaker of Essig Baseball Park for 12 years.

Randy served in the Minnesota National Guard, coached baseball, was a COF Youth Director and taught CCD. He enjoyed mushroom and ginseng hunting.

Randy is survived by his wife Joan; children, Craig (Mark Storck) Berdan, Jeff (Jill) Berdan, Tammy (Terry) Helget and Steve (Diane) Berdan; grandchildren, Elias “EJ” and Ian Berdan, Maddy, Jay and Mallory Helget and Molly and Emily Berdan; brother, Leon (Shirley) Berdan; sister-in-law, Arlene Berdan; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ron and Pat Brey, Judy and Ray Rathmann, Mickey and Dale Witt, and Joe and Jody Brey. He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Eleanor Berdan; and a brother, Arnold Berdan.

In lieu of flowers, the family would be pleased for memorials to New Ulm Oncology Department, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, or the donor’s choice.
