George W. Horan

EDINA — George W. Horan, 95, Edina, formerly of New Ulm, passed away on Jan. 15, 2017 as a result of Alzheimer’s disease, which was diagnosed approximately two years ago.

He was one of four children born to George M. Horan and Theresa (Fisher) in Minneapolis. He grew up in “Nordeast” Minneapolis and then the family moved to ‘the suburbs’ of Columbia Heights. He attended Edison High School and then Columbia Heights High School where he played football, basketball and baseball for the “orange and green.” He graduated in 1939.

In 1942, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served on a PT boat during World War II as a radioman. Just prior to the war ending, he was selected to attend officer training school. Following his service and utilizing the GI bill, he attended the University of California at Berkley and then the University of Minnesota, where he earned a BS degree in engineering.

In 1947, George began his career with 3M Co. in St. Paul. He held various engineering positions in Minnesota and Chicago and then management positions, including assignment as the Plant Manager of the Electro Products plant in New Ulm from 1963 to 1973 and thereafter assignments in Brussels, Belgium, Cincinnati, OH and St. Paul where he retired after 33 years with the company.

While in New Ulm, George was active and served as president of the Chamber of Commerce, served on the Doctor Recruitment Committee, the Highway 15 Committee, and the Musikanpenfest Committee. He also served on the board of directors and as president of the Rotary Club, served on the board of directors of the New Ulm Country Club and as president of the United Way. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

In 1950, George married Vivian Louise Morgan from Proctor, MN and together they raised seven children. In 1981, George and Vivian retired to San Antonio, TX where they continued to reside until Vivian’s death due to cancer in 2000. George then returned to the Twin Cities where he continued to reside until his death.

George is survived by all seven of his children; Mary and (Greg Cardinal) of Mpls., James (and Eileen) of Eagan and Phoenix, Thomas (and Julie) of Tulsa, OK, Patrick (and Kathy) of Edina, Megan of Coon Rapids, Shannon of Blaine and Timothy of San Antonio, TX; 15 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.

George was predeceased by his sister, Margie; his brothers, Jim and Pat; and his granddaughter, Misty.

A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017, visitation at 1 p.m., service at 2 p.m., at the Cremation Society of Minnesota Chapel, 7110 France Ave South, Edina, MN 55435 (952-924-4100). Memorials preferred to Park Nicollet Methodist Hospice.
