NEW ULM — Luverne Fischer, 87, of New Ulm died Monday, Jan. 9, 2017 at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with Monsignor John A. Richter celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow in the New Ulm City Cemetery, Soldier’s Rest Section with full military honors being conducted by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday and 7:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home NORTH CHAPEL in New Ulm.

Luverne is survived by his wife, Lois Fischer of New Ulm; daughters, Mary (Ken) Bruss of Lenexa, Kansas, Ann (Rick) Reckow of St. James, Lucy (Daniel) Warren of Becker, Emily (Jason) Roering of Mankato; sons, Paul (Rae) Fischer of Redwood Falls, Peter (Julie) Fischer of Stewartville, Joseph Fischer of New Ulm, John (Rose) Fischer of New Ulm, Karl (Nancy) Fischer of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Steven (Thais) Bruss, Paul (Sarah) Bruss, Austin (Sarah) Bruss, Benjamin Reckow and his fiancée Marissa Olson, Elizabeth Reckow, Veronica Fischer (Joseph Maletta), Callie Fischer, Erin Fischer, Kyle Fischer and his fiancée Courtney Kral, Garrett Fischer, Alex Fischer, Jessica (Kevin) Idahor, Josh (Erin) Stifter Laura Fischer and her fiancé Michael Pappal, Sarah Warren, Samuel Warren, Lillian Warren, Carlyn Roering, Jack Roering, Julie Roering and Claire Roering; ; great-grandchildren, Robinson, Theodore, Oliver, Ivy, Dakoda and Dayliana; and by his sisters-in-law, Geraldine Fischer and Grace Fischer both of New Ulm.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandchildren, Andrew Bruss and Grace Roering; a sister Astonia in infancy; and by his brothers, Delbert and Patrick Fischer.

Luverne Joseph Fischer was born Oct. 14, 1929 in Sigel Township, Brown County to Joseph and Louisa (Domeier) Fischer. He attended School District #69, St. Mary’s Grade School and then graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Sleepy Eye in 1948. After graduation he farmed with his father and played baseball with Essig and Stark. Luverne entered the U.S. Army in March of 1953 and was stationed at Camp Gordon and then in Korea until he was honorably discharged in March of 1955. He was united in marriage to Lois Forstner on April 26, 1955 at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm. They farmed in Sigel Township and then he was employed at Sleepy Eye ASC Office until retiring in 2007 and moving to New Ulm. Luverne was a past member of the Stark Baseball Board where he coached pee-wee girls softball and boys baseball. He loved the outdoors, hunting mushrooms, digging ginseng, trapping and fishing.

He was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, VFW and the American Legion.
