NEW ULM — Harold Richter, 97, of New Ulm died Saturday, December 10, 2016 at Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 15, 2016 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Pastor Nate Scharf  officiating.  Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm.  Full military honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard.

Visitation will be 4 – 7 p.m. Wednesday and from 7:30 – 8:30 a .m. Thursday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, NORTH CHAPEL, in New Ulm and will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Thursday.  To leave an online condolence for his family or to sign the guestbook go to: www.mvfh.org

Harold is survived by his wife, Laura Richter of New Ulm; daughters, Carol Richter of Madison, South Dakota, Bonnie (Bruce) Hulke of Courtland, Laurie (Gordon) Bernardy of St. Peters, Missouri; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.  He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Alyce (Ervin) Steinhaus, Ila (Clayton) Modlin.

Harold Clarence Richter was born on February 16, 1919 in New Ulm to Clarence and Irma ( Langhoff) Richter.  He served in the U.S. Army during WWII from January of 1941 to July of 1945.  On April 26, 1948 he was united in marriage to Laura Wieland in New Ulm.  Harold drove milk truck for Five Star Dairy and also did trucking for Minnesota Steel Drum.  He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed his cabin on Lake Collinwood after retirement.  Harold enjoyed gardening, playing cards, watching the MN Twins, MN Vikings, MN Gopher games, listening to old tyme music, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.  Harold was a life member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, and a member of the American Legion Post #132 in New Ulm.
