Charles R. ‘Bud’ Bregel

FAIRMONT —  A Mass of Christian Burial for Charles R. “Bud” Bregel, 96 of Fairmont, MN. will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 7th, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont.  Burial will follow the service at Lakeside Cemetery with full military honors by the Martin County V.F.W. Post 1222 and the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36.  Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 6 at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Bud passed away Thursday afternoon, December 1, 2016 at Goldfinch Estates in Fairmont.  The Lakeview Funeral Home of Fairmont is handling the arrangements for the family.

Charles Richard Bregel (Bud) was born on April 16th, 1920 in Franklin, MN. The son of Frank and Lillian (Anderson) Bregel.  He attended school in Fairfax, MN and graduated from Fairfax High School.  He played several years on the Fairfax baseball town team and competed in the Southwest Minnesota Baseball League.

On October 7, 1941 he was inducted into the U.S. Army.  He served in the U.S. and on the Island of Leyte in the Philippines during WWII.  While he was in the service he was united in marriage to Valerie Jacquelyn Shaw in 1943 in Port Angeles, Washington.  After Bud was honorably discharged from the Army, they lived in Port Angeles, WA before settling in Fairfax, MN.  Bud then was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Butterfield-Myers on December 1, 1965 and they lived in Redwood Falls for one year.  In 1966 they moved to Morris, MN where they purchased their first A&W restaurant.  They would eventually move to Fairmont in 1975 where they purchased the Red Sun Restaurant, remodeled, and purchased the A&W franchise.  They owned and operated the A&W in Fairmont until 1987.  In 1988, they owned and operated Mrs. B’s Family Restaurant in Fairmont until retiring in 1995.  Shirley passed away in December of 2006.

Bud was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, various bowling leagues, and the Fairfax Fire Department while living in Fairfax. Bud was an avid sport fan.  His favorite team, of course was the Minnesota Twins. In his free time he enjoyed fishing, playing games and Bingo with his family and friends, and traveling.

Bud is survived by nine children, Richard Bregel (Lila) of Redwood Falls, MN, Cheryl Abelson (David) of Mountain Lake, MN, Gary Bregel (Marsha) of Littleton, CO, Brian Bregel of Concord, CA, Susan Ford (Rick) of Muskogee, OK, Bryce Bregel (Cheryl) of Butterfield, MN, James Bregel (Cindi) of Fairmont, MN, Loren Bregel (Wendy) of Woodbury, MN, Jon Bregel (Heather) of New Ulm, MN, four step children, Dennis Myers (Jendel) of the Philippines, Patricia Timmerman (David) of Jordan, MN, Laurie Jensen (David) of Welcome, MN, Wesley Myers of Owatonna, MN; 19 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents and wife, Shirley, Bud was also preceded in death by one son, Michael Bregel, 2 brothers: Dwayne and Donald Bregel, and one sister; Donna Mae McClard.
