Furth-Meile Insurance moves to Broadway

NEW ULM — After about a century at its 9 1/2 N. Minnesota St. location, Furth-Meile Insurance, Inc. moved to the former Bank Midwest building, 26 S. Broadway.

Mark Furth said the business has been a family-owned, independent insurance agency for many decades. His grandfather Theodore R. Furth started the agency on the front porch of his home at 104 S. Broadway in 1939, just a few door down from where the agency is now located.

The Furth family’s insurance work goes further back. Theodore H. Furth’s father Peter H. Furth worked as a field underwriter for the Paul Fire & Marine Insurance Company in New Ulm in the early 1900s.

In 1965, Ted’s son James R. Furth took over the family business. In 1970, Jim merged the Furth Insurance Agency with the Meile Insurance Agency that was founded in 1893 by Adolph Meile and Nick Henningson at 9 1/2 N. Minnesota St. Jim’s son Paul T. Furth joined the business in 1979.

Paul’s nephew Thomas R. Furth graduated from St. John’s University in 1991, studying business management and playing football for coach John Gagliardi. He worked for the St. Paul Companies, the same company his great, great grandfather Peter worked for, doing underwriting and claims adjusting. Tom joined Furth-Meile Insurance in 2000.

Mark Furth said the business move to Broadway was made to better serve customers and allow for continued growth in future generations.
