Polar Express in Sleepy Eye

SLEEPY EYE — THE Sleepy Eye Downtown District Committee is presenting Polar X-Press in Sleepy Eye every Saturday in December.

The event will run from 2 to 7 p.m. beginning Dec. 2, in inside and outside downtownbuildings.

There will be an Elves Workshop where you can see the elves create and paint toys, crafts for children along with a gift shop.

There is an Avenue of Trees where businesses and churches have sponsored and decorated a Christmas tree.

We have vendors, and Polar Princesses where little girls can schedule a princess makeover. On Main Street enjoy the hot chocolate bar,visit with the Elf Princess, see Carolers strolling as Santa welcomes children of all ages.

At the close of the Polar X-Press at 7 p.m. visitors can enjoy Lights in Motion at Sportsman Park on Sleepy Eye Lake.

On the 2nd, at 6 p.m. there will be a tree-lighting ceremony in Memorial Park.

NEW ULM — Who would pull 34 artillery pieces weighing up 17,000 pounds across miles of swampy marshland, by hand, at night, in silence so not to warn the enemy, to attack a fort considered by some to be “as strong as the Rocky Mountains”?

That was the task given to General Quincy Adams Gillmore: lay siege and take Fort Pulaski. Gillmore was an engineer by training and most of his military experience was as an engineer. Did he succeed? What lessons were learned in this endeavor?

Come to the Minnesota Valley Civil War Round Table meeting Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the New Ulm Public Library and find out. All meeting are open to the public and never a charge.

Figure Skating Club hosting Fall Festival

NEW ULM — New Ulm Figure Skating is hosting their Fall Festival figure skating competition the 18th and 19th of November at the New Ulm Civic Center. There are concessions available and admission is free to the public.

Blue Mound, Brookings, Buffalo, Hutchinson, Inver Grove Heights and New Ulm Skating club members are entered in the festival. This is a chance to see skating and see if you would enjoy being a part of the club. There are individual, family and group events. There is also a used skate and costume sale and vendors.

NEW ULM — New Ulm Public Library’s Silent Book Group will meet Saturday, Nov. 18 from 10-11:30 a.m. Participants read whatever they want, and then break at 11:15 to socialize. Call 507-359-8332 for more information.
