NEW ULM — Local artist Maggie Schwab will demonstrate chair caning at THE Historic Kiesling House, 220 N. Minnesota St., this Sunday, Aug. 6, from 1-4 p.m.

The heritage art of chair caning is being kept alive by contemporaries interested in preserving this interesting art form. The public is invited to see how chairs were caned in days gone by. Schwab has been caning for over 30 years. She did furniture refinishing and was asked by some people to learn how to do caning; she did and fell in love with the art form.

This presentation complements the regular programming which includes a guided tour, a video presentation and exhibits. Explore the past at Historic Kiesling House constructed in 1861; it survived the US – Dakota War of 1862 and is the only wood-framed house from that era remaining in Brown County. Learn about early pioneer settlement, customs and traditions of area immigrants and events, like the US-Dakota War of 1862, that shaped New Ulm. Examine the development of community and influence of social and political issues on residents that lived in this area of Minnesota.

Admission: $3 per person – Free 5 and under.
