GBHS Spring Meeting:

Austria Early 19th Century

NEW ULM —“Austria Early 19th Century, Conditions Leading to Revolution and Emigration” is the subject of the German-Bohemian Heritage Society’s Spring Meeting program to be held at the New Ulm Country Club Saturday, May 20.

The presenter is Wade Olsen, an experienced traveler and expert on the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the homeland of many New Ulm area German-Bohemians. Olsen will delve into the history of ancestors who lived under Austrian Habsburg Empire rule. Attendees will gain a better understanding of events leading to the failed 1848 Revolution, and the reasons for emigration to America.

An added attraction will be photographs of a huge 1894 wedding in the New Ulm area, where one could search for their ancestor’s photo.

The social hour begins at 5 p.m., dinner served at 6 p.m., with the program to follow. Cost is $20 per person. Reservations are due Friday, May 12. Phone Jenny Eckstein at (507) 233-4300.
