Nicollet All-School Reunion to be held during Friendship Days

NICOLLET – In recognition of the 100th anniversary of the consolidation of Nicollet area schools to form District 507 in 1916, an anniversary committee has been meeting monthly to plan special events to mark the occasion.

An All-School Reunion – the first since 2006-will be held Saturday, June 18, during Nicollet’s Friendship Days.

The community event will celebrate 100 years of outstanding public education in School District 507, as well as the construction of the Nicollet Consolidated School in 1916. Students from all graduating classes have been invited to take part in a full day of activities.

A 5:30 p.m. banquet in the school gym will be the highlight of the day, with other events taking place earlier in the day. A Dad’s Belgian Waffle breakfast from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m.-put on by the NHS Music Department-will get things started.

Tours of the old Nicollet Public School gym, built in 1938, will be available from 1 to 4 p.m., and tours of the present school, built in 1987 with additions in 2006, from 2 to 4 p.m. An ongoing photo history slide show will be presented in the school theatre during those same hours.

A social gathering will be held at the school from 4 to 5:15 p.m., with a special presentation at that time, when past and present members of the Nicollet High School band will join forces to present a mini-concert. They’ll make their grand entrance into the gym at 5:15 p.m., just prior to the banquet.

The buffet style meal will feature ham and roast beef and will conclude with anniversary cake.

Advance sale tickets are required for the meal. Invitations were mailed April 12 to all NHS graduates with known addresses. Anyone who did not get an invitation, or is interested in attending, is asked to call contact person Chuck Gappa at 507-354-3918 or email bschmidt@hickorytech.net. Reservations are due Friday, May 15.

Banquet participants will be invited to gather for a social at the Nicollet American Legion, enjoy the Miss Nicollet coronation and band music in the park, or socialize at Rapid Rick’s or the Cabin afterward.

To help fund the event, the reunion committee has received major donations from the Carl and Verna Schmidt Foundation and the Greater Nicollet Area Community Foundation. The GNACF will unveil a special plaque at the school at 4 p.m. on June 18.

The committee is also working with Nicollet Public School and the Nicollet American Legion to coordinate events.

Members of the NHS 100th and All School Reunion committee are Lisa Fischer, Chuck and Peggy Gappa, Dawn Gens, Melva Griebel, Chad Johnson, Ruth Klossner, Barb Poehler, Betty Schmidt, and Amy Soost.
