3 Knowledge Bowl teams make state in Classes A, AA

Big Schools

BLUE EARTH — New Ulm High School’s Purple Knowledge Bowl team advanced to the State Knowledge Bowl tournament, by placing second in the Region 9AA large school tournament. Only the top three teams of approximately sixty large school teams qualify for the state tournament each year.

Mankato West Scarlet won the regional qualifier, and Fairmont Crimson took third, both also advancing to state. The state tournament is at Cragun’s Resort in Brainerd April 10-11.

Of New Ulm’s other regional qualifying teams, White placed sixth and Crimson placed 10th.

New Ulm seniors Peter Spengler and Emma Maudal will be recognized at the state pre-tournament banquet for their multiple trips to the state tournament. Spengler will be making an NUHS program record fourth trip to the state tournament, while Maudal is going for the third time.

Small schools

BLUE EARTH – The Class A Region 9 Knowledge Bowl meet was held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Blue Earth on March 12. Twelve teams competed from eight schools.

Top 5 small schools: 1) Minnesota Valley Lutheran Black 108.5. 2) Minnesota Valley Lutheran Gold 103.5. 3) Loyola Royal Blue 102. 4) Minnesota Valley Lutheran Blue 101.5. 5) Minnesota New Country School Rainbow 94.5.

MVL Black and Gold have both advanced to the state Knowledge Bowl meet at Cragun’s Resort in Brainerd April 10-11.
