NUACS warms it up with annual Snowfest theme

NEW ULM — The weather was chilly outside, but New Ulm Area Catholic Schools (NUACS) was offering a warm weather theme for its annual Snowfest Fundraiser.

This year’s theme was “Lake Life.” The gym of St. Anthony Elementary was decorated around the theme of summer at the lake and many of the auction and raffle items were also summer oriented.

The Snowfest always brings out large crowd. NUACs Assistant Development Director Tammy Klawitter said the Bingo crowd was out in full force. Bingo is typically the most popular activity at Snowfest, but with the weekly Bingo games at Pub & Patio a thing of the past, the crowd was starved for Bingo action.

The silent auction also brought out the crowd. One of the most contested items was the 4th Grade Cook Book. Last year the book was the highest selling silent auction item.

Klawitter said the book includes two recipes submitted by each fourth grader and a story from the student on why they chose the recipe.

The bake sale was another popular section. Darcy Beranek monitored the table and said smear kuchen was the top seller this year. The unique German pastry item and is sought after by many New Ulm residents.

“That’s what they come for,” Beranek said.

Snowfest is a large fundraising event for NUACS each year, and second only to the annual appeal.

In past years, NUACS has attempted to raise around $75,000. Klawitter said this year there was no target goal. All money raised will be used to cover the schools operating costs.

This year, through the annual appeal, the school is looking to purchase extra Chrome Books. The hope is to create a one-to-one device ratio with the students by the end of the year.
