NEW ULM — About a dozen Brown County Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party members reviewed the November General Election locally and discussed future strategy at Turner Hall Wednesday night.

“We have a lot of work to do. We want to get the (Minnesota) Senate back in 2020. We want to do more door knocking,” said Brown County DFL Vice Chairman Larry Czer.

“We knocked on more than 10,000 doors and were in lots of parades. It was really top-notch,” Czer added. “Twin Cities people were complimenting us, but we have to do more. We have to do more educating people about DFL principles. We have to change more hearts and minds.”

New Ulm native and District 16B Minnesota State House candidate Marinda “Mindy” Kimmel said messaging needs to be ongoing, not just in election years.

“Talk radio has demonized the DFL party,” Czer said. “I’m amazed that people vote against their own self-interest.”

Connie Grams said there is opportunity for the DFL to gain ground now because of what is going on.

Czer said the party’s strategic plan will include grassroots input. Members agreed that a rural caucus is a good idea.

“We really need to change the mindsets of people. This can help us do that,” Czer said. “Brown County really had a great (voter) turnout last fall. Mindy (Kimmel) won six New Ulm precincts but we got buried in Sleepy Eye, Springfield and Redwood Falls.”

Another Brown County DFLer said single-issue voting was wrong, a shame.

“Abortion and gun control. What a dichotomy (contradiction),” said Randy Krzmarzick of Sleepy Eye.

Brown County DFL Chairwoman Lori Sellner said the 2019 Brown County DFL Convention will be held Saturday, March 23, at a site and time to be arranged.

A First Congressional District meeting is set for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Rochester IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical workers), 9 80th St. S.E.

The Brown County DFL Party believes every American and Minnesotan has the right to a world-class education, stable employment with fair wages, accessible and affordable healthcare, safe communities, and a retirement with dignity and security, state party documents.
