City seeks information on Hermann Monument

NEW ULM — The City of New Ulm is asking for the public’s help to locate any information on the Hermann Monument in 1897-1950.

It is seeking any information to accurately document any changes or construction efforts on the monument during that time period. Currently the city is working with MacDonald & Mack Architects on a comprehensive historic building conditions assessment, funded by the state Historic Preservation Office.

The assessment will help better understand the materials and techniques used in the construction of the monument and the current condition of the monument’s structure.

It will provide guidance on the protection of the monument.

Together with the State Historic Preservation Office and MacDonald and Mack Architects, the city is planning on completion of the assessment by the end of 2018 and will have developed a scope of work to move forward with on the site. Ensuring the Hermann Monument is safe and structurally sound will allow residents and visitors to enjoy this historic monument and provide views of the beautiful valley in New Ulm for generations to come.

If you have any photos, drawings, sketches or other information regarding the Hermann Monument in 1897-1950, please contact the City of New Ulm Building Safety Department at (507) 359-8245.
