Nicollet County commissioners get insurance update

ST. PETER — Nicollet County Administrator Ryan Krosch provided commissioners with an update on federal changes occurring with Medicare supplemental insurance Tuesday.

Nicollet County has facilitated Medicare supplemental insurance for retirees in the past but as plans change significantly and insurance costs increase and benefits decrease, retirees are able to go out on their own and buy insurance at a lower cost.

The County will send letters to retirees that now purchase supplemental insurance with information from County insurance agent Bill Chukuske. County staff will follow up with a phone call to retirees explaining the situation.

An informational meeting will be scheduled with Chukuske for retirees to obtain more information on insurance options. The Insurance Committee will schedule a meeting to discuss elected officials eligible for insurance benefits upon retirement. Options will be reviewed and a recommendation will be brought to the board.

In addition, commissioners unanimously approved:

• A conditional use permit for John and Solveig Langr to establish a wholesale and retail greenhouse in New Sweden Township.

• Donations to Nicollet County including $1,425 from various donors for a veterans’ van, $425 for a loan closet and Community Employment Panel food and beverage donations from Diamond Dust, Kwik Trip, Subway, Family Fresh, River Rock and Dunkin’ Donuts.
