Fixing the cannons

Chipping paint has been the bane of sailors since ships became metal. Brown County’s Facilities Director Jesse Kral explained the county’s periodic maintenance to keep two Navy 5-inch cannons that guard the courthouse front doors in tip-top shape. Workers are shown as they chip away at some rust spots on the cannons. “A mild Minnesota afternoon is the perfect time to chip paint,” Kral said. The cannons were replaced in 1977 after a 63-year absence when the original set was reclaimed for steel during WWI.
