NEW ULM — The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office on Wednesday positively identified the remains discovered and collected on July 29 by the rest area on Highway 4 near the Cottonwood River as those of Vincent Hugo Mathiowetz, 73, of Sleepy Eye, said a Brown County Sheriff’s Office press report received late Wednesday night.
The remains were positively identified based on dental records, it said.
Mathiowetz was reported missing June 3, approximately 3 miles south of Sleepy Eye on Highway 4 near the Cottonwood River.
His disappearance triggered a massive search, occasionally hampered by rain and high water levels.
The remains were found by someone using the rest stop.
