NEW ULM — This weekend area youth with the help of Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre (PFCT) put on two special performances of “Robin Hood” at the New Ulm High School Auditorium.

This year 45 kids in 3rd through 9th grade acted in a children’s variation the classic play. In this version, Robin (Tanner Dorschner) and the Merry Men are motivated to fight back against the Sheriff of Nottingham (Will Rutkowski) who are planning to cut down Sherwood Forest to create Mall.

PFCT is brought to New Ulm through Healthy Communities Healthy Youth (HCHY). HCHY Director Sheldon Rieke said PFCT has been coming to New Ulm for over 20 years. Area kids have preformed nearly every play in PFCT’s rotation.

The most impressive aspect of the performance is that the children only have five days to practice before they appear on stage. To the audience it seems like they have been practicing for months. Everyone is able to hit their mark, remember their lines and each joke delivers the laughs.

Rieke said the PFCT staff are so prepared they can create excellence in a few days.

A few of the kids acting are veterans of previous show, but many are acting for the first time.

Rieke said the best part of working with children is the enthusiasm they bring.

“They are bound and determined to complete the project,” Rieke said.

The PFCT will be back next year to host another performance. Parents and guardians and can register their kids in May. The performance is always held the first week after the July 4th holiday.
