NEW ULM — The Grand Center for Arts & Culture is going to let its members in on the fun for the next 4 Pillars Gallery Show.

The member art show opens to the public at 7 p.m. July 13, and will feature the works of art created by Grand members.

Anne Makepeace said a similar show was hosted three years ago, but that show was smaller and membership has grown since then. It was time again to give members a chance to showcase their work.

Not every member of The Grand is an artist, but members have an appreciation for art. Of The Grand’s 175 members, 20 submitted 30 unique pieces of art. Makepeace said only four of the artists featured in the show have their own studio space. Most of the works were done by art enthusiasts, which makes the show unique.

“The show represents a lot of genres, including charcoal, pottery, acrylic paints, oil paint, print making and fiber arts,” Makepeace said. “It’s nice to see a lot of variety.”

One of the challenges of organizing the show is deciding which pieces should be placed side by side. Makepeace said she tried to put similar pieces next to each other. Often that meant two works by the same artist would be placed near each other. However, in a few cases two separate members submitted similar themed work.

In one corner of the gallery hangs a painting by Maggie Schwab of an old Ford pickup truck next to a painting by Mary McClellan of an old barn. The two works feature a similar shade of red and rustic sensibility. It would be a mistake not to feature the two together.

The public is invited to view these works and others during the grand opening of the exhibit. The show opens at 7 p.m. but The Grand is hosting live music from Alec John on their back patio starting at 5:30 p.m. At 7:30 p.m. Anna Stine and Robert Bell will play in the Grand Kabaret.

The show will be on display in the 4 Pillars Gallery from July 13 to Aug. 3. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
