NEW ULM — Citizens of New Ulm were starting to miss the rains Friday. The temperatures reached a sweltering 96 degrees by early afteroon, according to the Martin Luther College weather station, combining with the humidty for a heat index of over 100 degrees.

Residents tried to beat the heat by staying indoors with the air conditioning on max. Those brave enough to venture outside found the wading pools and Washington and Lincoln parks were the coolest and most popular places to be.

Finding a good book at the New Ulm Public Library prove a popular diversion as well. The library remained the perfect place to chill out if your home lacked central air.

Childrens’ Librarian Jan Keaveny said the library had a lot kids stop by in the early morning, but the childcare groups were unable to attend.

Keaveny said the childcare kids needed to walk from Jefferson to the library and in this heat it was suggested they remain at the school.
