Oscar Viewing Party set for Grand on Sunday

NEW ULM — Which film deserves the Oscar for Best Picture? Should it go to the genre bending “Shape of Water,” the racial conscience horror film “Get Out” or the coming-of-age comedy Lady Bird?

If you have an opinion on this question then the New Ulm Film Society’s Oscar Viewing Party is the perfect place to discuss it.

The New Ulm Film Society is throwing party during the 90th Academy Awards.

The celebration begins Sunday, March 4 at the Grand Center for Arts & Culture. The doors open at 6 p.m. The Oscar red carpet event begins at 6:30 p.m. and the ceremony begins at 7 p.m.

For the last few years the Film Society members have held informal viewing parties, but this year the society to invite the public to an event at the Grand.

The live show will be projected on a big screen, which beats watching at home and since the event is live anything can happen.

Last year “La La Land” was mistakenly announced as Best Picture winnter, until officials realized the real winner was “Moonlight.” Will something similar happen this year?

“It’s going to be an exciting year,” Film Society member Steve Sherman said. “There is a lot up in the air as to which film will win Best Picture and it’s going to be fun to see which way things fall.”

Oscar prediction sheets will be available at the event for those who want to see if they can guess how Academy voters will decide this year.

The event is free to the public and there will be a cash bar. Members of the public are encouraged to dress up in formal clothes to get in the Oscar spirit, but it’s not a requirement.
