GOP, DFL caucuses tonight

NEW ULM — Tuesday night is caucus night in Minnesota, and precincts across the state will be open for both the Republican and Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) caucuses.

Those attending the caucuses help choose the candidates parties will endorse. This year in Minnesota, the top election is the Governor’s race. The two-term DFL Gov. Mark Dayton is not seeking re-election, meaning both parties are looking for a candidate to succeed him.

A non-binding straw poll for governor will be conducted by both parties.

There are currently six candidates for governor on the DFL side: Chris Coleman, Tina Liebling, Erin Murphy, Rebecca Otto, Paul Thissen and Tim Walz.

On the Republican side, there are four candidates for governor: Keith Downey, Mary Giuliani Stephens, Jeff Johnson and Phillip Parrish.

The caucuses will also start the process for endorsing candidates for two U.S. Senate seats, eight congressional seats, 134 seats in the Minnesota House, state auditor, secretary of state and attorney general.

In New Ulm, the Republican Party will meet at the New Ulm Event Center at 301 20th Street South. The DFL Party will meet at the New Ulm Community Center at 600 N. German St.

In Sleepy Eye, the Republicans meet at 400 4th Ave. SW, in the Sleepy Public High School Cafeteria. The DFL also meets at 4th Avenue SW, in the Sleepy Eye Public Elementary Library.

In Springfield, the Republicans meet at 5 North O’Connell in the American Legion Center. The DFL meet at 12 S. Burns Ave. in the Springfield Public School Cafeteria.

For those uncertain of the location of their precinct, the State of Minnesota’s Secretary of State website has created a caucus location finder. Visit http://caucusfinder.sos.state.mn.us and input your zip code and street address to find the appropriate Caucus.

Anyone who will be eligible to vote on Nov. 6, 2018, and lives in the precinct can participate. The caucuses start at 7 p.m. but registration may start earlier.
