New Ulm Public Utilities opens 2018 MMUA Tom Bovitz Memorial Scholarship Contest
NEW ULM — Current high school seniors whose parents are New Ulm Public Utilities customers are invited to enter the Minnesota Municipal Utilities Association (MMUA) Tom Bovitz Memorial Scholarship contest. The scholarship was created as a public relations tool to increase the awareness of public power and create goodwill in member communities.
Here’s how it works: High school seniors who plan to attend a post-secondary educational institution are asked to write an essay on the theme of “Municipal Utilities: Good for All of Us.”
The entry deadline to the New Ulm Public Utilities Commission (NUPUC) is April 2, 2018. NUPUC will select a local winner and award a $500 prize. This local winning essay will then be entered into the state contest. MMUA will award $2,000 to the first place winner, $1,500 for second place, $1,000 for third place and $500 for fourth place.
Students can obtain the entry form and guideline documents from their school’s guidance office, at the NUPUC office (310 1st North St.), or on the New Ulm City website (ci.new-ulm.mn.us). Contact the NUPUC at 507-359-8228 or visit the MMUA website at https://www.mmua.org/services/tom-bovitz-memorial-scholarship-program for examples of past essays and for more information on utilities.
