SLEEPY EYE — A shop building located six miles north of Sleepy Eye on Golden Gate Road was lost to fire Wednesday afternoon.

Sleepy Eye Fire Department received the call shortly after 3 p.m. from a property owned by Maynard Haala. Fire Chief Ron Zinniel said by the time his crew arrived on the scene the shop had already fallen down and was burnt up. The Sleepy Eye Fire Department, with assistance from New Ulm Fire Department, were able to extinguish the rest of the fire and prevent it from spreading to other buildings.

Zinniel said Haala was doing welding work in his shop which resulted in a fire that spread quickly. The contents of the shop, which included at least one truck, added fuel to the fire. The shop and all its contents were a complete loss.

No injuries were reported but an ambulance was called in as a precaution.
