NEW ULM — The New Ulm Area Catholic Schools held their annual Alexander Berghold Socity Appeal dinner at the New Ulm Country Club on Saturday. The event honors donors who have contributed $250 or more to the annual appeal.

The dinner opened with a prayer from Bishop John M. LeVoir. Colonel Glen Christensen, a NUACS alumnus, was the featured speaker for the evening. Christensen graduated in 1987 and made a special return to New Ulm from Washington, D.C.

The goal of raising $145,000 was surpassed this year with $146,737. This is the most successful appeal since the it began in 1985.

Sara Rieland, Director of Development and Alumni Relations, said the higher than normal donations were due to gaining new donors through social media campaigns.

The appeal is named after Fr. Alexander Berghold, the founder of Catholic Schools in New Ulm. Berghold was the first resident pastor in the city, architect of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, and the founder of the first hospital in New Ulm.

“We are very excited about the continued growth we are seeing in the Fr. Alexander Berghold Annual Appeal,” said Reiland. “The funds raised during the annual appeal are a vital part of the NUACS operating budget. We are committed to providing the highest quality education, and our continued success depends significantly on the support of NUACS alumni and friends. We look forward to providing a high level of education for generations to come. We are grateful to all our generous supporters who have demonstrated their commitment to Catholic education in New Ulm.”
