NEW ULM — The Grand Center for Arts and Culture is seeking artists’ submissions for its annual juried art show.

The Grand is calling for art submissions to the ninth annual Artscape Juried Art Show. Artists can submit art Nov. 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Nov. 2 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Grand.

“Please submit your art, because the more we get the better,” Executive Director Anne Makepeace said.

Each artist can submit up to three pieces. It costs $5 per submission for students and $10 per submission for adults.

The student category is the only change this year. Anyone in seventh grade to 12th grade qualifies as a student.

Previously it had been an age-based category. However, as the goal was a high school category and ages could vary between high school seniors, The Grand changed it to grade-based, Makepeace said.

Art can be two or three dimensional, created in the last five years and must be exhibition-ready when submitted. No installations or art with multiple authors are allowed.

In the adult category, no art created under supervision of an instructor is allowed. Art that has previously been shown at the Grand will not be accepted.

Makepeace was unwilling to reveal the name of the juror quite yet, but did confirm they are a professor in the art department and the University of Minnesota, Mankato.

Accepted art will be posted online at thegrandnewulm.com by Nov. 7. Art that does not make the cut can be picked up Nov. 8 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The show will open with a reception Nov. 10, 7-9 p.m. Prizes such as best in show are awarded during the reception, and voting for the people’s choice award begins. The latter runs until Dec. 15 when the show closes.

“Many artists are doing this, I think, just out of pride in their work,” Makepeace said. “I think that is why they enter shows like this. It is not that there is a huge dollar prize; it is for visibility.”

The Grand is still looking for show sponsors as well. The prize money for the show is dependent on what sponsors give.

“The sponsors primarily help us fund the prizes for the artists,” Makepeace said.

Artscape started as a city-wide art crawl to help drum up business for local shops. For the last six years, The Grand has run it; the first two years were out of the Kiesling house, Makepeace said.

While no one in grades lower than seventh are allowed to submit art, The Grand will have a children’s art show in February, Makepeace said.

Questions can be directed to The Grand at grand@thegrandnewulm.com or (507) 359-9222.
