NEW ULM — Before the Oktoberfest celebration continued Saturday, over a hundred of New Ulm’s most athletic took part in the Hermann 5k Run/Walk.

An estimated 170 runners lined up on Garden Street in front of the Recreation Center. After the New Ulm Battery fired their cannon the runners proceeded up the Center Street hill and ran to Flandrau State Park and followed a path to Indian Point and back to the finish line in Hermann Heights Park.

The adults did not have all the fun. The younger kids got their chance to compete in mini-race in the Rec Center Parking Lot before the 5K. Gus Mattson, 4, won in the four and younger division.

Kallen Kolden, 6, took first in the five through 8 division.

Levi Hamlin won the 9 and up foot-race.
