Good turnout for 4-H swine show at Brown County Fair
NEW ULM — The 4-H Swine Show had strong showing this year. There was a wide variety of swine spread across 23 classes.
Ag Society Director Alisa Mangen said in recent year Brown County 4-H has seen more pure breed entries like Duroc, Hampshires and Yorkshire pigs. This has expanded the opportunities for competition. Despite the addition of pure breed divisions the cross-breed division remained the most popular field with eight entries in the category.
Mangen also credited the age of the entrants as another factor. This year 4-H has a higher number of State Fair eligible students (6th grade or older) which influenced a greater turnout
The first manager award went to Jordan Kieper for Senior Showmanship. He would later take first in the Market Barrow Category for his 264 pound hog. This is Kieper’s seventh year showing swine. He first started showing in 2010. He became involved through his family. His older brother raises hogs and he’s following in the family tradition.
Mallory Drake was awarded the Intermediate Showmanship award. The Drake family took most the award at Friday’s Open Class Swine Show and Mallory continued the trend on Saturday. Mallory also one Champion Market Guilt with Molly Carnell taking Reserve. In the Market Barrow category she took the reserve ribbon.
Mallory said she just enjoys working with the pigs in her off time. Its a fun experience and she will continue to show at future 4-H events.
Aubree Schmidt took Junior Showmanship. At nine-years-old, Schmidt has been attending swine shows for three years and is thrilled to show off her pig named “Mally.”
Brayden Mathews received the Champion ribbion for his Breeding Class Gilt with Paige Green taking Reserve Champion.
