NEW ULM — Competitors stuffed their faces with apple pies Friday at the Brown County Free Fair Pie Eating Contest.

Contestants lined up next to a long table and waited for the “Go” to rip open the cardboard boxes containing the pies and pig out.

There were three age-based rounds. Winning the 18 and older round was Steve Sherman, a New Ulm native and first-time competitive pie eater.

“I always thought I could do well in a pie eating contest or a food eating contest and I just saw that it was happening like half-an-hour ago and so I just came by and decided to take the prize,” Sherman said.

Taking first in the 10 to 16-year-old round was 11-year-old Link Hoffmann. Elijah Chavarria, 7, took first in the under 10 round.

First place went to whoever could eat and swallow all of their pie first and raise their hand to alert the judges.

Every crumb had to be consumed. If any fell on the ground the contestant was disqualified.
