National Night Out celebration Monday in German Park

NEW ULM — New Ulm celebrates National Night Out on Monday, July 31, in German Park.

The event starts at 5:30 p.m. and will feature music, food and children’s entertainment. These nationwide events are community events designed to fight back against crime by helping neighbors connect with each other, watch out for each other and become more familiar with their police departments.

Park and Recreation program supervisor Joey Schugel said families will be able to eat dinner at the event. Families may choose between a pork chop meal or pizza and even get Culver’s frozen yogurt for dessert.

The Schell’s Hobo Band will play two sets. The first at 5:30 p.m. with the second starting at 6:30 p.m.

Schugel assured there would be tons of free entertainment for the kids. Park and Rec will be bringing two bouncy castles to the park, balloon animals, face painting and other children’s games. For the older children the National Guard will bring its climbing wall. The park will also host a reptile animal exhibit.

In the parking lot below the park the New Ulm Fire Department will hold a fire safety demonstration. Last year the fire department showed everyone how to combat a grease fire. This year they are returning with a smoke trailer to demonstrate other fire safety lessons.

The annual event is once again sponsored by the New Ulm Police Department, New Ulm Fire Department, United Way and the New Ulm Park & Rec.

In the event of rain the event will be held at the New Ulm Civic Center at the Brown County Fairgrounds, but weather forecast predict perfect weather for National Night Out.
