NEW ULM — The New Ulm Area Emergency Food Shelf needs a few good people to volunteer as food rescue drivers.

“We need a few people to drive to grocery stories at 9 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and pick up ‘rescue’ food that grocery stores would otherwise throw away,” said Executive Director Brad Kirk.

Kirk said each volunteer could pick up food at grocery stores one day a week if they preferred.

“I’m also looking for call-in volunteers. People I can call to have them come in to volunteer at the Food Shelf if I need them,” Kirk said.

Thanks to recent food drives, Food Shelf supplies are pretty good right now. Kirk said the need for food donations may rise this summer, when food drives are not typically done.

Food items which may be needed include Jello, pudding, jelly, canned meals and fruit and “helper” meals.

“We can always use cash donations,” Kirk said. “We plan to expand our Food Shelf building. We recently bought a new freezer so we could store more perishable items. But, we had to put it in the garage because we don’t have room for it right now.”

Kirk said he wanted to thank the local business community and residents for their generosity.

“Everyone has given us great support. I can’t imagine what it would be like without that,” Kirk said.

Food Shelf hours are noon to 3 p.m. Monday and Wednesday and 6:30 to 8 p.m. the first Monday of each month. The food shelf is located at 1305 S. Valley St. Call 354-7668 for more information.

Food Shelves are also located in Sleepy Eye and Springfield. The Sleepy Eye Food Shelf is located at 130 2nd Ave. N.W., in the basement underneath the police station. Hours are 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday.

The Springfield Food Shelf at 804 E. Rock St., serves Springfield, Comfrey, Sanborn, Clements and Cobden. Hours are 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday and 4:30 to 5 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month.
