United We Stand Players of New Ulm to receive 2016 Human Rights Award

NEW ULM — The New Ulm Human Rights Commission sponsors a Human Rights Award each year to recognize people, community organizations or businesses in New Ulm who have contributed significantly to the preservation and advancement of Human Rights. This year, the commission has chosen The United We Stand Players of New Ulm to receive this award.

A reception will be held for the United We Stand Players at the New Ulm Community Center, 600 North German St, New Ulm on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 5:30-7 p.m., with an award ceremony at 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

The United We Stand Players are an outstanding group of individuals from New Ulm who 22 years ago started meeting as a presentation group wanting to learn how to be effective speakers to their legislators. They wanted to educate their representatives on the issues they had to face as individuals living with a disability. Thereafter, the group began performing plays that educate the audience about the hopes, dreams, hurts and struggles persons with disabilities face on a day to day basis. This group has performed seven full-length original plays and many shorter performances. The group writes their plays over the course of sometimes two years and then performs it in New Ulm and around the state. The plays are often done with narration, speaking parts, dancing and singing showing the many gifts the performers have to share with their community.

The group is just beginning work on their eighth full-length play called, “Beautiful You: A Play about Bullying.” It focuses on the stories of people’s situations with bullying. This play is the first one they have done where the group will invite audience participation as they will work together to create solutions to the issue of bullying. As an added bonus on the evening, they will receive the Human Rights award, the group plans to give those in attendance a sneak peak performance of their upcoming play tackling the issue of bullying. The group is directed by Wilbur Neushwander-Frink of Mankato Arc. The United We Stand Players were nominated by the parent of one of the performers.
