Golf cart request returns

NEW ULM — The City Council has been asked reconsider the use of golf carts within the city limits.

The council received a request to allowing golf carts in 2009, but voted it down. Both the 2009 and 2017 requests were submitted by Dennis Born.

In 2009, a sub-committee was formed to look into the matter. After a month, it recommended against it. The sub-committee received several calls against, and the council had concerns with safety.

Minnesota allows a city to adopt an ordinance allowing special vehicle operations. At this time New Ulm allows the operation of snowmobiles or all-terrain vehicles with restrictions. These vehicles may be operated from place of storage to the nearest departure point in the corporate limits or a designated trail.

The city has the option to charge a fee for permitting golf carts to regulate usage.

In other business:

• Dr. Ann Vogel is requesting New Ulm’s participation in Building Blue Bridges activities in March. The Building Blue Bridges is a public support program recognizing March as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. The city would show support by lighting up a New Ulm landmark with blue lights on the night of March 6.

• The council will consider approving a professional design services agreement with ISG to provide architecture and electrical engineering specifications for interior lighting replacement at City Hall. The relighting project is included in the 2017 budget. The project cost is $7,000, plus construction administration service at $110 per hour.
