Festive for Fasching: Fasching decorations go up on Minnesota Street Sunday

NEW ULM — Downtown Minnesota Street received a festive makeover Sunday afternoon. Members of the Narren decorated lamp posts downtown with colorful strips of cloth in honor of Fasching.

Jeanette Wilson and Connie Bestland help put up the cloth strips every years. Nearly ever lamp post from the Chamber of Commerce to the Glockenspiel is decorated.

Typically, the hanging of the cloth strips is done under cold weather conditions, but this year Wilson and Bestland were able to complete the task without coats.

“This is the best weather we’ve ever done this in,” Wilson said.

Fasching will be celebrated later in February than in the past few years, but springlike temperatures are unusual for the celebration.

The official start of the Fasching celebration is Friday afternoon when the Narren abduct the mayor from City Hall. Weather forecasts are predicting a return to winter weather by then, with a high chance of snow. In the meantime, local volunteers are delighted to have perfect weather to set up next weekend’s festivities.
