Winter buckthorn season ends at first bud break: Now until bud break is an ideal time to remove buckthorn without bugs, itchy weeds or humidity! Purple round up concentrate will not work until leaf formation is complete once the bud break has started, which has historically been April 1-July 1, depending on the weather and temps. Be sure to carefully after March 15. Applicators are available at the Rec Center front desk. A small sponge paint brush can also work. Tint the herbicide with Rit or pond dye to know what you have treated. Herbicide needs only to be applied to the rim where the bark meets the wood. If you are unsure if it is buckthorn, nick the bark, which is orange.
