Truancy meetings produce results

NEW ULM — The Brown County Board of Commissioners will learn from a report at its meeting Tuesday that recent meetings about truancy between school and county officials have produced positive results.

Brown County Family Services Director Tom Henderson reports in his  truancy update that last-resort weekend placements can have benefits.

“We haven’t done this (weekend placements) for a few years and we need to get back to it,” Henderson wrote in his update. “A second accomplishment was meeting with superintendents to get earlier referrals from school districts to be more preventative with what we call ‘diversionary truancy interventions.”

Henderson wrote that all in attendance agreed to change some of their methods to deal with the subject “so we could get earlier referrals which could result in less time spent getting used to being truant and more time in school.”

In addition, Henderson wrote in his out-of-home placement report that his department is experiencing another round of a higher number of sexually-deviant adolescents in treatment.

Henderson also mentioned a old bill with Medica that may wind up in court.

“We started paying a ($100,000) bill with Medica we have fought for a year and a half because if we don’t, we won’t get our Medical Assistance reimbursement,” Henderson wrote in his report. “Our ability to pay the bill expires one year after it is incurred.”

In addition, Henderson said his department lost its final bill appeal with Medica so Brown County can consider suing Medica.

“We are working hard on that with the county attorney,” Henderson reported.

Commissioners will also consider:

• Set a letting date for surface rehabilitation projects on CSAH 8 from CSAH 24 to TH 68, CSAH 10 from CSAH 27 to CSAH 29, CSAH 11 from CSAH 24 to TH 14, CSAH 24 from CSAH 16 to CSAH 8, and CSAH 24 from CSAH 11 to CSAH 13. The five segments have many pavement cracks.

The Brown County Highway Department recommends setting the letting date for 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 1, at the courthouse. Results will be brought to the Board for approval Tuesday, March 7. The projects are anticipated to be rehabilitated from June to October.

• Testimony by affected County Ditch 47 landowners at a redetermination of benefits (ROB) public hearing at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Commissioners will then vote on the ROB and, if appropriate, order the drafting of findings of fact and order. Landowners would have 30 days to appeal the drafting if signed by commissioners.

The board meeting begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, in the courthouse commissioners room.
