Swing with Sinatra
NEW ULM — Swing with Sinatra and other crooners this Friday and Saturday during State Street Theater’s “Frank Sinatra and Friends: A Crooners Tribute.”
The first show in the theater on State Street since the power was turned back on will be Friday, Jan. 20, at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, Jan. 21, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 ahead of time and $20 at the door.
The show is intended to be a recollection of the foregone shows that crooners like Sinatra performed.
“Think back to that Vegas time frame, back there when they were playing in the clubs out there, and they had their band, and they did some music, they did some comedy, they did some back and forth,” Director Kent Menzel said.
Appetizers will be served and a cash bar will be available for guests who are of age. The curtain will be drawn and a club stage is set up on the gym floor of the main auditorium.
A live seven-piece jazz band will accompany a group of singers and performers. Menzel encourages people to dance if they feel so moved.
“Our talent is all local. I mean, these are people from the area, drawing from, to start, New Ulm and then Mankato and St. Peter,” Menzel said. “This is not a group that came from New York or somewhere. It is a collection of people that we gathered from around here.”
The theater company is anticipating an older crowd to come, though Menzel encourages parents to bring children who would enjoy the music.
The organizers decided to go with the tribute as a way of broadening audiences ages compared to their last show.
“Our last show that we did was the ‘Charlie Brown Christmas’ for the State Street Theater, and that was really geared toward kids,” Menzel said. “Our season this year is kind of all about all ages. Not to say that younger people cannot enjoy this music, but this is more of a throw-back this is kind of geared toward the older audience.”
Tickets can be purchased from the Chamber of Commerce or by calling (507) 359-9990. They can also be purchased through email at statestreettheater@gmail.com and on the theater’s website statestreetnewulm.org.
