NEW ULM — Learn the meaning of “concatenation” during the art show Concatenation at The Grand Kabaret.

An opening reception for mixed-media artist Shelley Caldwell’s show will take place 7-9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6, at The Grand.

The show will be on display until Jan. 27. Viewing hours will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

“Concatenation is basically defined as a series of interconnected things or events,” Caldwell said. “So the body of the work that is on display at The Grand is basically a series of interconnected, mixed-media drawings that I have executed throughout undergrad and graduate programs at (Minnesota State University) in Mankato.”

Drawing is Caldwell’s bread and butter. She enjoys the medium particularly in conjunction with mixed media because it allows for almost unlimited amounts of new results.

“I really like that definition of  interconnected things and events for two reasons: because of both my practice in mixed-media drawing and how that connects to my conceptual interests of nature, nostalgia and stylization of subjects,” Caldwell said.

Nostalgia, stylization and nature all occur repeatedly in the works on display. Leafless trees, patterns and what appears to be an abstract river are all present in the show.

“A lot of the work is either monochromatic or black-and-white and has no color, or it is very one colored,” Caldwell said. “Usually it is a blue or something like that, which kind of reflects this time of year to some degree.”

More shows will follow Caldwell’s including a mixed-media show in February by three students, a children’s show and a show in conjunction with Minnesota State University Mankato.

While The Grand may have gotten popular due to live music shows, the organization is dedicated to all types of music.

“It is about utilizing the building to nurture artistic abilities and the artists, as well as offer a space for organizations and people to have art and cultural experiences,” Executive Director James Lundgren said.

The Grand has seven art studios to rent, a few of which are currently open, along with a music recording studio and music practice room.

A series of art classes will be returning this year as well. This year’s lineup includes: children’s painting, harmonica, introductory photography classes and more.
