WARNING: Garlic Mustard Weed was found in South Park and a few clusters on the bike trail. This weed is more invasive than buckthorn, as it kills good insects and native wildflowers and tree seedlings. Garlic mustard is blooming right now with white clusters of 4-leaf flowers in a cluster on top of the stalk. The lower leaves are wide fan-shape and scalloped, while the upper leaves turn arrow-shaped. It smells like garlic when pulled. It is hard to miss in the dry stalk stage as they are tall, clumped together and stand upright, even in the snow. If you see tall stalks that have not fallen down, look down for the new plants. It is a good idea to stick a grocery sack in your pocket on city and park walks. You can pick up garbage along the way and sack any garlic mustard you find in the parks. Never throw flowering or seeded garlic mustard on the ground. Sack it with your garbage and don’t put it in your compost pile. Woods no longer take care of themselves. For help with removing buckthorn or garlic mustard, email newulmbuckthorn@gmail.com or text/call Ellen Vancura 612-718-9774
