RENU committee to review parks proposals

NEW ULM – The Reinvest New Ulm (RENU) Committee will review information on projects proposed by Park and Rec Department on Tuesday.

RENU is a group of citizens who are accessing projects seeking funds from the renewal of the local option sales tax. The half-cent tax expires in 2020.

The Parks Department is asking for consideration of Recreation Center expansion, Civic Center expansion, Johnson Park grandstand renovation and Hermann Heights Park improvements.

The Recreation Center expansion proposal features aquatic center renovation and the addition of a water park, a multi-purpose turf field house, and an indoor playground and wellness center. Preliminary cost estimates place these projects at $12 million.

The Civic Center expansion would include multi-purpose rooms and storage space, team rooms, and fitness and training space. The preliminary cost estimates are $1.5 million.

The Johnson Park renovation would focus on improvements to the grandstand, reconstruction of the main entrance, new concessions, remodeling to create a baseball museum with a local hall of fame. This project improves accessibility to and within grandstand. This first phase to renovate the park is estimated at $1.2 million.

The Hermann Heights improvements relate to the site’s infrastructure. The road leading into the park would be realigned for traffic safety, a parking lot would be established, additional sidewalks and walkways would be created to improve accessibility. The cost is estimated at $750,000.

Each project will be allotted 10 minutes to give an overview and 20 minutes of question-and-answer time. Public input will be allowed for the presentations.

The committee meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers.
