Off the Shelf: Landscaping at the Library
In 2016 The Wanda Gag Monument Committee generously donated the sculpture of Wanda Gag, a New Ulm artist and illustrator, which faces Broadway outside the New Ulm Public Library. The sculpture was designed and created by New Ulm native Jason Jasperson. In June 2018, the Committee completed its plan for the beautification of the library by donating landscaping surrounding the Wanda Gag sculpture.
The landscaping surrounding the sculpture is complete and we are looking forward to enjoying it! River Creek Nursery has extended the retaining wall, added mulch, and planted some lovely perennials as well as a dwarf lilac tree. The Street Department graciously helped move two benches; one that was donated by Hobart and Charlotte Anderson and one that was donated by the Putting Green and was created in memory of Bobbi McCrea and her daughters, Abby and Savannah. Landscaping around the sculpture was made possible in part by a donation from the New Ulm Area Foundation.
In order to continue the beautification of the library exterior, the library plans to fill the planter between the two library buildings with hostas. The area has been prepped for planting, but we need your help! If you have hostas that need to be thinned out, please consider donating the plants to the library to be used in the planter. We will use a variety of hosta types. If you would like to contribute, please contact Assistant Director April Ide at 507-359-8331 or firstname.lastname@example.org with the number of hostas and variety names. We have limited space and will only be able to take 20-25 hostas; we will take the plants on a first come, first served basis. In order to keep the plants healthy until planting can begin, we ask that you do not bring your hosta donations to the library until contacted to do so.
On behalf of the New Ulm Public Library and Library Board, I want to express our appreciation for the generosity of the Wanda Gag Monument Committee members and their hard work to get the landscaping planned and completed, as well as all those who have made donations of their time, money, energy, or physical items to help beautify the library! We invite you to stop by the library and check out the landscaping and enjoy the Wanda Gag Sculpture area.
