Park & Rec Report

Tot Swim held Friday, Dec. 15 from 9:30-11 a.m. in the shallow area of the Indoor pool. This is a great opportunity for small children to get used to the water with others their own age during this special swim for small children. Use the tot slide and other fun toys! Adults must be in the water and children must be within arm reach of an adult at all times. Whirlpool closed during to swim. $2.25 per child. Adults free

Thank you Day of Play Sponsors and Participants! Thank you to those who joined us for Skating with Santa and the New Ulm Steel to support our local Area Food Shelf! 278 pounds of food and $82 in cash donations were collected. A special thank you to Santa and players from the New Ulm Steel Hockey Team who made the event extra fun! Also, a very special thank you to our Days of Play Sponsors who so generously donated cash to make this event possible! Please support and thank them!

Lifeguard Training Class offered Dec. 28 and 29 from 4-9 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 30 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the New Ulm Rec. Center’s Indoor Pool. Participants must be at least 15 years old by the last class date to register. Completion of a pre-course physical fitness test required to continue with class, which consists of 300-yard swim (6 laps) using front crawl and breaststroke, tread water for 2 minutes with no hands and retrieve a 10-pound brick from 7 to 10 feet of water, swim 20 yards back to the side of the pool, get out without using a ladder or stairs within 1 minute and 40 seconds in order to proceed with the course. There will be 3 final skill scenarios to successfully complete certification and a written exam score of 80 percent or higher. Upon successful completion, a two-year lifeguard certification will be issued. This is a blended learning class that requires 5 to 7 hours of online work to be completed prior to the start of class. Register by Thursday, Dec. 21 online or at the Recreation Center’s front desk. Fee is $173 Residents and $190.30 Non-Residents.

Open Pickleball Saturdays in December through March from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Please note: there will NOT be pickleball February 10 or 17 because of scheduled basketball tournaments.

Short Track Tuesdays and Saturdays: There will be a “short track only” on Tuesdays from 6-9:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8-10 a.m. from now through March.

Open Broomball Wednesdays through Feb. 28 from 7:15-8:45 p.m. at the Civic Center. This non-checking league is open to men and women, ages 18 and older. Players may divide into teams for a fun, competitive and challenging game play. Helmets, broomball stick/broom and shoes are required. Shin guards and gloves are recommended. Park and Rec has limited equipment available on a first come-first serve basis.

Rock on Ice Friday nights at the Civic Center from 7-9 p.m. Please note: starting time is subject to change slightly to accommodate hockey tournament games and other rentals. Be sure to check the schedule at www.ci.new-ulm.mn.us

Harman Park Skating Rinks are in the process of being flooded for outdoor ice skating and hockey. Stay tuned for updates and announcements regarding warming house opening date.
